The Innovision Probe II Plus is a specialized, periscope‑style cinema lens system. It has a long, slender “probe” barrel that lets the camera get into tight or unusual spaces and shoot extremely close-up perspectives. It’s a spherical lens (not anamorphic), with T‑stop of T6.3, designed for high‑clarity at very close focus distances.
Key variants include focal lengths of 12 mm, 20 mm, 28 mm, 40 mm, and 55 mm.
What is it ideal for?
- Tabletop / Product shots — filling the frame with small objects, or doing dramatic reveals of details that regular lenses can’t capture.
- Specialty / macro‑perspectives — getting extremely close to subjects, even entering tight spaces. Think of shots inside bottles/glasses, inside plants, or the “insect eye” perspective.
- Commercials — particularly where you need very high visual impact and detail (food, liquids, cosmetics, etc.).
- Cinematic reveals or transitions — where the camera moves through or into environments in a way normal lenses cannot. The probe’s shape allows creative blocking of space.
Benefits
- Extreme Close Focus with Depth: The lens maintains sharpness even at very close distances; even when the front of the lens is inches from the subject, you get clarity and depth. Subtle fall‑off and depth of field add a “surreal” but immersive look.
- Unique Perspective / Creativity: Because of its probe shape, the lens allows angles and viewpoints that are impossible with standard lenses — getting into tight or awkward spaces, and offering dramatic “inside” shots.
- Modular and Versatile: Multiple focal lengths let you switch perspectives (wide, standard, macro) while retaining the same core style of the probe look. Also works well with rigs, motion control, dollies, tripods, etc., which helps adapt it to many production setups.
- Cinematic Look: Good contrast, minimal distortion in center, softer edges for artistic fall‑off, some highlight blooming. The kind of stylized “otherworldly” or “hyper‑real” look that draws attention.
- Heritage / Recognizability: Because it’s well known and has been used in many commercial productions, using it gives a certain visual prestige or signature look. Cinematographers already familiar with it can use it intentionally.
